In 2005 Ford introduced the all new fifth generation Mustang highlighted by the “retro-futurism” design of the car echoing the fastback Mustang models of the late-1960s. Developed under the supervision of Chief Engineer Hau Thai-Tang and designer Sid Ramnarace, the new mustang was codenamed the S-197 and built on the new D2C platform at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.

The GT model used an aluminium block 4.6L SOHC 3-valve Modular V8 with variable camshaft timing (VCT), and a manual Tremec TR-3650 5-speed option for the transmission. The engine produces 300 hp (224 kW) at 5750 rpm and 320 lb-ft (433 Nm) of torque at 4500 rpm, with the quarter mile run done and dusted in 13.8 seconds at 99 mph.

The GT benefitted from bigger brakes, a limited slip differential, better handling suspension setup, stainless steel exhaust and larger wheels over the base model V6.
